Although females comprised only 29% of the DUI treatment admissions, they were more impaired and experienced more problems than their male peers. The findings showed that additional resources, including treatment for co-occurring mental disorders and living in sober living homes, may be keys to helping womenwith substance abuse problems achieve abstinence and prevent additional DUI episodes.
Most first-time drunk driving offenders have high rates of other substance abuse as well as other psychiatric disorders, according to a new Yale University School of Medicine study. These offenders may need enhanced intervention programs that go beyond the conventional alcohol-related programs, the researchers say.
